Its asset base has already shrunk to HK$3.192 billion, roughly 70 percent below its peak. That implies a starting pool near HK$10.6 billion of retail risk concentrated in one name. But the wrapper hides a synthetic structure. To deliver two times the daily return, the fund enters total return swaps with investment banks, or it trades a basket of derivatives that mimics the Korean equity. This is not a passive, transparent index fund. It is an actively managed derivative contract that resets its leverage every single day.
The product is a child of the zero-interest-rate era. When global central banks flooded markets with cheap money, every high-volatility asset class became a gambler's dream. Semiconductor equities were a favorite, and single-stock leveraged ETFs were the casino tables. The current rate environment is different. Money is expensive. Risk appetite for high-beta narratives is shrinking. The macro headwind is not the only reason this fund is dying, but it is the climate that lets the structural flaw kill it. The holder then loses twice: once to the market, once to the machine.
The conventional explanation for the 80 percent collapse is that SK Hynix is a cyclical memory maker, that memory prices are falling, and therefore the stock fell and the ETF fell harder. That is correlation, not causation. The deeper story is that the vehicle itself transfers value from long-term holders to short-term market makers and swap desks. It is a negative-sum instrument. Even if SK Hynix returns to its old high, the ETF holder is not guaranteed to recover. Consider a two-day sequence: the stock falls 10 percent, then rises 10 percent. The stock ends down 1 percent. Regulators are watching. Hong Kong's SFC approved this product for retail trading, and it is fair to ask whether that approval is compatible with investor protection. But do not expect an intervention to save holders. The SFC will require disclosure and monitor sales practices. The damage is already in the NAV.
